00:00 All right so today we're diving into the world of surfing. 00:03 Oh yeah 00:04 which is, I mean everyone's seen it and it's such a visually arresting sport. It is, it's really incredible to watch it really is we're going to be looking at some excerpts from a source called Okay the Thrill of Surfing, which is actually a translation from Korean K it's like tunny that's awesome. And yeah we're going to see what we can learn about this really exciting topic. Let's do it. And the source right out of the gate kind of sets this scene for us 00:31 and it's so cool. It's like this surfer on this just giant wave and the sun is hitting it just right. Oh wow it's just beautiful imagery and they're talking about how the wave is curling over and they use this term barrel wave. 00:46 Yeah barrel wave. Have you heard that? Oh yeah that's like the holy grail of surfing you know, to get inside that tube that's created by the wave curling over. It's like you're enclosed in this, this moving wall of water. That's incredible. Yeah it's like being in a cathedral of water. 01:04 It's just like a totally different world. Yeah absolutely than what we experience here totally. And the source really does a good job of highlighting the contrast that you see when you're watching surfing because on the one hand you've got this incredible power of nature. 01:21 Yeah tons of water moving around 01:23 exactly and it's just so heavy and strong. And then on the other hand, you have this, this human being who has somehow managed to harness that power. Yes and it's like dancing with it 01:37 and that's what makes it so amazing right like you see them kind of almost become one with the wave 01:42 and so effortlessly too 01:43 it looks effortless. 01:45 Yeah. But I mean we all know that it takes an incredible amount of skill. 01:48 Oh yeah to do that that's a fair joke. 01:50 So it's really fascinating and I think it's interesting how surfing kind of captures both. Okay this like this thrill like there's so much adrenaling, 02:00 the crashing water and the speeds. 02:02 Yeah and then also this like serenity almost abs 02:05 absolutely being out there in the ocean. It's like you're surrounded by this incredible power but there's also this kind of peacefulness to it. Exactly the source actually talked about that a lot did. It was really interesting like they were describing how surfers actually talk about it being like a spiritual experience. Wow almost like a moving meditation. I could see that. Yeah where they kind of find this harmony in the middle of all this chaos of the waves crashing and everything. 02:31 It's like a metaphor for life in a way right you know, like finding that bounce 02:35 exactly finding that peace amidst the storm 02:39 and this idea of pushing boundaries. Yes testing limits 02:43 that's a big part of it too 02:45 and that leads us to something that was in the source that I found just mind the largest wave ever surfed. 02:52 Oh, I love this stuff. Big wave surfing gets me 02:57 oh yeah me too. 02:58 So what are we talking? 02:59 Okay get this 101.4 feet Rodrigo Kxa Wow back in 2017 in Nazare Portugal 03:06 heard of Nazare that place is insane like that's where they go for the big waves. 101 feet though 03:15 that's unfathomable 03:17 taller than a 10 story building. Oh my God it's just it's unbelievable. 03:21 The source actually described it as riding a moving mountain. I think that's the perfect analogy, 03:26 right it really is 03:28 it's just this massive wall of water moving towards you. Can you even imagine the mental and physical strength it takes? 03:36 I can't even imagine paddling out on a normal sized wave right like it's scary enough. 03:42 You and me both. 03:43 It's interesting that they talk about both the mental and the physical. 03:47 Yeah because I think that's something that a lot of people don't think about. They see these surfers and they think, oh, it's all about being, you know, physically fit right but it's so much more than that. The mental game is huge. I think about it. You're out there on this tiny board 04:03 facing down this mountain of water. You have to be so in tune with the ocean, with your body, with your mind, 04:11 able to make split second decision. 04:13 Yes absolutely. Wow the source goes into detail about how these big wave surfers they train relentlessly really. Yeah they visualize different scenarios they practice their reflexes they really get to know the ocean conditions. It's all about minimizing the risk, right? Because obviously there's a lot of inherent danger sure but they're not just out there being reckless 04:38 it's a calculated risk exactly. So that brings up this really interesting question. Okay because if we know that somebody has served a wave over 100 feet tall H, is there a limit? 04:49 That's the question isn't. 04:51 Is there a wave that's just too big to ride? 04:53 That's what everyone wants to know. It's like this constant challenge for surfers and for scientists too you know, I hadn't thought about that. Yeah they're always trying to figure out what's possible and technology is always evolving. 05:06 Yeah. New boards, new techniques 05:08 exactly. And who knows maybe someday waves that seem impossible now will be surfable in the future. 05:15 That's crazy to think about 05:17 it is. But it's important to remember that respect for the ocean is key for sure. You can't just go out there and try to conquer nature, 05:25 right? It's about that balance again. 05:26 Yeah working understanding its power 05:30 that's amazing. So I guess we're left with this thought. If we continue pushing these boundaries, what incredible things will we see? 05:39 I can't wait to find. 05:40 I mean, either I mean, just imagine the story. 05:42 Yeah the story is yet to be written on these giant canvases of water. 05:47 It's pretty poetic when you put it like that. 05:49 It's true though 05:50 that's something to think about. 05:51 Definitely. 05:52 Thanks for joining me on this deep dive 05:54 is my pleasure. 05:55 So glad we got to explore this together 05:57 me too it was fascinating. I learned a lot me too 05:59 until next time.
